My name is Leon Sit, and I’m a UCLA student who heard that Irvine was preparing for district-based city council elections for the 2024 cycle. As someone who grew up next to Irvine (a stone’s throw away — in Tustin) and developed ties to the city through its magnificent infrastructure, influential education institutions, and unique culture, I think of it as my civic duty to help propose ideas for how Irvine can best prepare six districts for the transition away from at-large city council elections.

I was about to prepare a much lengthier statement, but I will let my proposal speak for itself. I tried to connect communities I felt were similar under one lens or another in distinct districts, and hopefully this proposal will help guide discussion for the preparation of Irvine’s first district elections.
